Skin surgery, outpatient surgery
In outpatient surgeries, we solve a problem using local anaesthesia, without surgical intervention and without anaesthesia, so the patient arrives and leaves on their own feet. The outpatient surgeries we perform are all so-called skin surgery procedures, such as:
- mole removal
- removal of sebaceous cysts (atheroma),
- fat lump removal (lipoma),
- fibroma removal,
- removal of other pigmented cell lesions,
- surgery on ingrown toenails.
The operation is always performed by a surgeon or plastic surgeon, usually on the advice of a dermatologist. If a dermatological screening recommends the removal of a mole or other growth, we will book the patient in for outpatient surgery. If the dermatological screening does not reveal a risky or problematic lesion, but the patient wants to get rid of a mole (or other lesion on the skin) for aesthetic or other reasons, a dermatological examination is still required before surgery.
Procedure for surgery:
- surgical conditions
- local anaesthetic injection
- cover the surgical site with sterile isolation
- we will remove the lesion
- if possible, we use subcutaneous sutures to join the wound lines
- bonding, usually a special adhesive plaster is sufficient
For a small mole, this means 15 minutes from anaesthesia to dressing.
All tissue removed will be sent for histological examination (the results of which will be available for discussion in 2 weeks).
The wound is checked 2-3 days after the surgery with a short follow-up, and depending on the type of surgery, sutures can be taken 10-20 days later. As a general rule, the operated area must be kept dry, i.e. no water should be allowed to reach the suture until the suture is removed, and the surgical area should not be stressed (sports, movements that cause stretching of the skin). These rules are hardest to follow in summer, so unless the surgery is urgent, it's best to schedule it from autumn to spring.
After the scars are removed, extra care should be taken to protect the scars from light for six months, otherwise the scar may become heavily pigmented. The use of a scar treatment gel or patch is also recommended during this period to achieve the best results aesthetically.
Ingrown toenail
and treatment options
An ingrown toenail is when the fingernail has grown into the soft tissue around it, causing swelling, inflammation and pain. Ingrown toenails are typically sensitive to pressure, touch and pain. Flesh may form on the cuticles, and inflammation may develop around the edges of the nails, often with purulent discharge.
Most often it occurs on the foot, especially the big toe, which can cause:
- wearing shoes that are too tight (toes do not get enough room);
- improper trimming of toenails;
- improper pedicure;
- injury to the toe;
- congenital (e.g. a toenail that is more bent than average).
At Secret Medical Dermatology, we also perform traditional and laser ingrown nail surgery to eliminate the symptoms.
Traditional surgical treatment of ingrown toenails:
The removal of the ingrown nail edge is performed under local anaesthesia, using a wedge-shaped incision to remove the ingrown nail edge and the nail matrix. It is not usually necessary to close the wound with stitches.
Laser surgery for ingrown toenails:
Laser nail surgery (laser surgery of ingrown toenails) is performed under local anaesthesia. During the procedure, the excess nail cells at the edge of the nail production zone are removed by laser, without cutting or suturing. The wound after laser nail surgery heals more beautifully and with less pain compared to traditional procedures. The patient is able to walk and work immediately after the procedure.
The surgeon can determine which is the better option for a particular patient - laser surgery for ingrown toenails or traditional surgery.
In many cases, an ingrown nail can recur after surgery. Recurrences can be prevented by proper foot hygiene, proper nail trimming techniques and wearing ventilated, non-close-fitting footwear.
